Australia to allocate $700 million to protect the Great Barrier Reef

Australia will allocate an additional one billion dollars (about $700 million) to save the endangered Great Barrier Reef, on which 64,000 jobs depend, the government announced Friday.

The new plan calls for an increase in investment to three billion Australian dollars ($2.1 billion) by 2050. According to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the funds will go toward improving water quality, preventing erosion and ocean pollution.
The Great Barrier Reef stretches 2,300 kilometers along the Queensland coast. It is believed that warming waters in the world’s oceans could lead to the death of corals.
