Deforestation is a global problem. It is relevant not only not only for Russia, but for a number of other countries as well. According to deforestation statistics, about 200,000 km2 of forests are cut down around the world each year. This leads to the death of tens of thousands of animals.
If we consider the data in thousands of hectares for individual countries, it would look as follows:
1. Russia – 4.139;
2. Canada – 2.45;
3. Brazil – 2.15;
4. USA – 1.73;
5. Indonesia – 1.6.
China, Argentina, and Malaysia are the least affected by deforestation. On average, about 20 hectares of forest plantations are destroyed per minute on the planet. The problem is particularly acute in the tropics. In India, for example, the area covered by forest has been reduced by more than half in just over 50 years.
In Brazil, large areas of forest have been cleared for development purposes. Because of this, populations of some species have been greatly reduced. Africa accounts for approximately 17% of the world’s forests. In terms of hectares, that amounts to about 767 million hectares. According to the latest figures, about 3 million hectares are logged annually. More than 70% of Africa’s forests have been destroyed in the last century.
